There has been a movie theater on Main Street since 1939. For generations it has been a place where this community comes together — our goal is to ensure it will be here for generations to come. A place to experience watching a movie, because that is what a theater is for, and beyond that, education, the arts, and a place where people can gather for something other than a meeting.
The Trinity County Community Development Corporation (TCDC) is in talks with the theatre’s owner about what comes next. Nothing is settled, and we don’t want to get ahead of a conversation that isn’t finished. What we can tell you is why we are at the table.
Running a movie theater in a small rural county is hard, and it always has been. Film rental, insurance, power and staffing cost about the same whether twenty people come or two hundred. For years this theater stayed open because a few people carried it. We’re grateful to them, and it isn’t fair to ask that of anyone forever. That part depends on the town.
A theater owned by its community only works if the community shows up, not just to buy a ticket, but to help run it. We will need volunteers to take tickets, work concessions, help with projection, clean up after the late show, and organize events. A few people carried this theater for years. Many people can carry it together, and no one has to carry it alone.
The Trinity Theatre closed on September 20, and we will share information about a reopening date as plans are firmed up.
The goal isn’t simply to reopen the theater.It’s to reopen it with a community behind it.
